ARTISTS SAY...

About the stories

I love the intrigue and intricacy of Clancy, Le Carre, Steinhauer, and Grisham. And Daniel Silva has redefined the conspiracy and espionage genre.

I love James Patterson's pace, and Nelson DeMille's attitude makes me smile.

I've also fallen in love with a number of works by my contemporaries - it's an unbelievable honor to share the bestseller lists with them, and with the great thriller authors I've admired for years.

My first career was as a fighter pilot, and then I spent many years after that in the national defense business. If you've ever spent any time inside the Beltway, you might recognize an insider's weariness in my characters. I've had the privilege of getting to know a handful of lifelong members of the clandestine services and the FBI, and also men and women whose names can never be known. I hope my stories do them justice.

Any unflattering distortions are either my errors or purely for entertainment purposes. Every good story needs a villain or two, after all. :)

Is Special Agent Sam Jameson in love with a traitor?

Spell Disaster

When elderly witch Enid Pettywood unwittingly summons a demon to Silver Hollow, it’s up to Issy Quinn and her cousins to send it back before the committee finds out.  When the demon’s evil intentions hit too close to home, Issy is forced to make a sacrifice that may haunt her for the rest of her days.

Nothing to Croak About

When Silver Hollow witch Adele Brundage curses the town with a plague of toads until her killer is found, Isolde Quinn and her cousins find themselves thrown into a dangerous world where someone will go to any lengths to keep a decades-old secret.

Cry Wolf

A mysterious death brings Deputy DeeDee Clawson to the scene of a movie being filmed at an old mansion in Silver Hollow. Tucker Rockwood, the star of the movie, is found dead, a stake through his heart. Lots of people might have wanted to kill Tucker, but when DeeDee’s investigation points in the direction of the movie’s producer, Caine Hunter, she thinks she has her man.

A Spell of Trouble

Isolde Quinn wants to fly under the radar of the paranormal police, but that’s going to be hard to do when her least favorite person dies in front of her magical pet store. Luckily she has her cousins and their quirky familiars to help out. But when she catches the eye of the Paranormal Police, the consequences may be more dire than they thought.

About the Author

USA Today bestselling author, Leighann Dobbs, discovered her passion for writing after a twenty year career as a software engineer. She lives in New Hampshire with her husband Bruce, their trusty Chihuahua mix Mojo and beautiful rescue cat, Kitty. When she's not reading or gardening, she likes to write cozy mystery and police procedurals (as L. A. Dobbs).

Her book "Dead Wrong" won the "Best Mystery Romance" award at the 2014 Indie Romance Convention.

Her book "Ghostly Paws" was the 2015 Chanticleer Mystery & Mayhem First Place category winner in the Animal Mystery category.

While Lars was a young lieutenant in Undergraduate Pilot Training, he read his first thriller. Again, it was love at first sight. "I will write amazing stories like this one day," he vowed solemnly.

He's still trying to live up to that promise.

Who are these books for?

People often ask me what age groups these books are for. I wrote them for adults - the main characters are in their 30's so not teens. But the series actually has fans from teenagers to great-grandmothers, so the answers is these books are for everyone!

Isolde Quinn flipped the sign in the window of her shop, Enchanted Pets, to Open. A burst of pride warmed her chest as she looked around at the cages, aquariums, and playpens where she had her beloved charges. Not pets. Not merchandise. Charges. Because that was how she thought of them—beings that were in her care until the right person came along to give them a home forever.

She loved this time of morning before the streets were full of tourists, when she could come in and check on all her little furry friends.

It was a perfect seventy-eight degrees in the store. Despite the muggy heat outside, Issy made sure it was always pleasant for the animals.

She slowly made her way to the back of the store, inhaling the smell of wood chips and dander, checking on each of her charges, running her fingers over the silky fur of the litter of kittens that had been raised specifically to be familiars to young witches. She scratched the cockatiels and parakeets that sidestepped their way along their perches to rub their heads against their cages.

In the back, Issy paused before the very last tank, a special delivery she’d gotten earlier in the week. She bent over, peering into the terrarium, brushing away one of the strawberry-blond corkscrew curls that had fallen into her eyes.

Inside the terrarium, a pair of solstice toads blinked up at her from their bed of moss, their orange eyes bright and alert, their purple necks glowing. The toads were quite rare, coveted by witches who wanted to cast the most powerful spells. They would fetch a pretty penny, but only for the right witch. Issy saw it as her duty to make sure no animal in her care was purchased by a witch—or human—with ill intent.

The saliva of the toads would make any spell ten times more powerful, but they had to be handled with care. The saliva could turn poisonous in the wrong hands, which was why Issy had a lock charm on the terrarium and also why she kept the toads in the back. Only paranormals looking for something special ever ventured back there.

Satisfied that the toads were in good health, she made her way back to the front, looking over the goldfish, hedgehogs, and bunnies that would become familiars to other witches or simply well-loved family pets to humans. She paused to look into a tank full of fire newts, which blinked up at her in dismay before scurrying under a rock.

“Don’t worry. I’m not after your eyes.” She chuckled and walked away. Witches didn’t really kill newts for their eyes—at least not any witches she knew.

“Yip.” Bella, the tiny orange Pomeranian who was her familiar, had been following dutifully at her heels and apparently now wanted some recognition. Issy picked her up and cradled the pooch in her arms, rubbing her cheek against the dog’s silky fur. She plunked a kiss on the dog’s head, her heart expanding at the look of adoration in Bella’s luminescent brown eyes. Bella’s pink tongue darted out, leaving a warm, wet trail on Issy’s face.

She’d been without a familiar for most of her life. One of her first familiars had died young, and Issy couldn’t bear the thought of losing another one, especially since she felt responsible for the death. But when she’d seen Bella in a litter of pups, she’d known in her heart that they should be together. Though the dog was still young and they couldn’t communicate with each other very well, Issy knew Bella would be a great familiar and companion in time.

“I don’t know why you coddle the creature. It has minimal intelligence.” The voice came from a chubby dark-gray cat that sat on her counter. Brimstone. He wasn’t one of the pets for sale in the store, nor was he her familiar. He was more like a companion.

He’d been hanging around with Issy and her cousins for as long as she could remember, but unlike a normal familiar, he came and went as he pleased and answered to no one. She didn’t know much about Brimstone, just that he was ancient and had the attitude to go along with it.

Bella growled at Brimstone, which caused the pudgy cat to laugh. The dog’s growl sounded more like the hum of a bumblebee than the threat of a canine. Issy put Bella down and headed behind the counter to open the cash register and get ready for the day.

As she approached the counter, Brimstone’s golden-orange eyes narrowed and his gaze shot to the window. He arched his back and hissed. Issy looked outside, her heart leaping when she saw the object of his distaste. It was one of her least favorite people, Louella Drummond. And she was heading this way.

Brimstone hopped down from the counter and ran as Issy watched Louella. Her dyed auburn hair was pulled up in some sort of modified beehive, which bobbed up and down as Louella charged across the street with bulldog-like determination. Behind her, a tall, thin woman in a navy-blue suit trudged along as if this were the last thing she wanted to do.

Issy couldn’t blame her. Not too many people got along with Louella. She was just plain mean, and she seemed to have taken an extreme dislike to Issy and her cousins—which was odd since most people in Silver Hollow were easygoing. In fact, most in the hollow were paranormals themselves. Vampires, witches, werewolves, even a warlock or two.

Sometime back in the 1950s, word had gotten out that Silver Hollow was paranormal friendly, and the town had become a mecca for them. Of course, there were humans here, too, but for the most part, none of them noticed that some of the residents had special powers. Nobody flaunted their gifts. Heck, most of the paranormals just wanted to live normal, peaceful lives. And when something odd did happen, the residents just shrugged it off as quirkiness. Even many of the humans that lived here had a quirky side, and they all got along fine.

All but a few. And Louella was one of the few. She liked to get her dander up about a cause, and by the way she was heading toward the pet store, Issy was afraid that she was the latest cause.

STILL NOT SURE?

Here's an excerpt from 3 Bodies & A Biscotti:

Lexy took a nibble of the pistachio biscotti. The crunch of the biscuit sounded like music to her ears. The sweet taste of the cookie combined with the contrasting creamy, soft bitterness of the dark chocolate coating created a riot of sensations in her mouth.

“Please take one, I’m trying out a new recipe and I’d love to know what you think,” she mumbled around a mouthful, shoving the tray of biscotti towards the three older women.

Ruth, Helen and Nans each picked up a biscuit, and bit into it noisily. They chewed tentatively at first and Lexy felt a pang of disappointment. Didn’t they like them?

Nans swallowed, then blotted her lips with a napkin. “It’s delicious, dear." The two other women nodded in agreement.
Lexy felt her shoulders relax. Creating new recipes was a key to success for her bakery business and she loved trying them out on her grandmother, Nans, and the other ladies because they always provided an honest critique.

“Just the right scheetmess,” Ruth said, slurring the last word, before reaching into her mouth and pushing down on he
r bottom teeth. She glanced around the table, then shrugged. “Sorry, I have new dentures and they keep slipping out.”

Lexy looked around Nans’s condo while she chewed her biscotti. It was a good size for an “independent living” condo in a retirement complex. Nans had moved here a year ago when she stopped driving so she could be closer to her friends and “the action”. The facility provided a variety of activities and entertainment and had a decent dining room where the residents could get meals if they didn’t feel like cooking.

The large complex had living quarters for senior citizens in various different situations, such as the assisted living facility and the nursing care section. Nans and the other ladies were quite independent and all had their own condos.

They were seated around Nans’s dining room table, situated in between her kitchen and living room, with a view of the entire living area. The morning sun streamed in through the sliding glass door at the other end of the room. Lexy could see water dripping from the snow melting on the roof and hoped it meant winter would soon be releasing its cold grip on the area.

Lexy’s eyes landed on the empty chair across from her.

“Where’s Ida?” she asked, her brows wrinkling together. The four women were usually always together and Lexy found it odd that Ida wasn’t there this morning.

“Oh, she’ll be right along. She had an errand to run,” Nans said, then looking at the plate of biscotti she added, “we’ll save her a couple of biscotti. I’m sure she’ll love them.”

Lexy nodded and took another dainty bite. Normally she would have devoured most of the biscotti by now, but she’d noticed her jeans were fitting a little tight and figured it might be wise to cut down on the eating.

“Lets get down to business and talk about the Bertram Glumm murder,” Nans said.

Lexy rolled her eyes. Nans, Ruth, Ida and Helen were amateur detectives. Though they were all well past the age of seventy, they still kept active and had been successful in solving many cases. They even had a name for themselves — The Ladies Detective Club. The problem was, they saw murder everywhere.

“You don’t know he was murdered,” Lexy said.

Nans peered at Lexy over the top of her glasses. “Of course he was dear. I think the girls know a murder when they see one.”
Lexy felt a pang of guilt. Nans and the other ladies had been instrumental in helping her solve a few murders, including a couple where Lexy was the main suspect. She had just returned from a national bakery contest in Las Vegas with Nans, where she had managed to win second-prize despite having been one of the suspects in the murder of one of the judges in the contest.

The Ladies Detective Club had helped her solve the case by using old fashioned detective work and communicating on their iPads. Lexy owed it to them to at least listen.

“OK, what have you got?” Lexy grabbed another biscotti. Had she eaten a whole one already?
Ruth pulled out her iPad, fingers at the ready apparently, to record their conversation.

“From what I know, Bertram went into nursing care when we were in Vegas, and passed away suspiciously the day before we came home,” Nans said.

“That’s right. Bertram was only seventy-one. He was healthy as a horse. In fact, he lived just two doors down from me,” Helen said, her eyes wide.

Lexy wrinkled her brow. “If he was healthy as a horse, what was he doing in the nursing care section? And why aren’t the police looking into his death?”

Ruth’s lips pressed together. “The police are just passing it off as another old person dying. They didn’t even do an autopsy!”
“Yeah, you know how they can be,” Nans said, then looking at Lexy, “not your Jack, of course. He’d listen to us…or to you.” She raised her eyebrows.

Lexy felt her cheeks grow warm at the mention of Jack. She’d been dating Detective Jack Perillo for almost a year now and, while he might listen to her about other things, he had made it clear that he took a dim view of her investigating murders. She felt her stomach clench, realizing that she’d be in hot water with him if he knew what they were discussing.

“Anyway,” Nans continued, “Bertram slipped on the ice and broke his leg. He lives alone and couldn’t manage on his own. He was in immense pain, so they put him in the nursing section ’til he could care for himself. They had only planned to keep him there for a week.”

Lexy narrowed her eyes in thought. Nans could be right—she usually was.
“But why would someone want to kill him?” Lexy asked stating the obvious question.
Before anyone could answer, the door to Nans’s condo flew open and Ida tumbled inside.

“Ladies, grab your coats. There’s been another murder!”

"This book was just incredibly fun to read..."
